PNLInfo Browser
Version 1.05, Windows
Installation and Setup Instructions

Welcome

PNLInfo Browser is a cross-platform gopher+ based client for
Internet browsing. Versions are available or in development for
Windows, Macintosh, Sun Motif, and DEC OSF/1 Motif.

This document explains how to install and set up PNLInfo Browser,
version 1.05 for Windows.

Requirements

This version requires the following:
- Windows must be properly installed and configured (it has been
tested extensively on Windows 3.1, and run successfully on
Windows for Workgroups and Windows NT)
- The system must be connected to the Internet
- The system must have a Winsock 1.1-compliant sockets DLL
(winsock.dll) installed to provide TCP/IP networking.

Recommended hardware is a 386 or better with 4MB RAM. This is
not a minimum; the application runs well on this platform. It
actually should also run on older ones, but will be slower.

Checking the files

After downloading and uncompressing the files, you should have
the following:
infobrws.exe the PNLInfo Browser program itself
     infobrws.hlp the help information
     infobrws.ini preferences file
     readme.txt this file
xwi320.dll dll needed to run the program
xwi320te.dll dll needed to run the program

Installing the files

First, be sure to exit PNLInfo Browser if it is running on your
system! Overwriting executables or .ini files in use can cause
problems.

The infobrws.exe and infobrws.hlp files need to be together in a
directory of your choice. Copy the infobrws.ini file to your
Windows directory. (While it is possible to edit the ini file
with a text editor, we do NOT encourage this. It is possible to
confuse the application by hand-editing, and most things you
would want to change can be done from within the application.)
Move the xwi320.dll and xwi320te.dll to your Windows\System
directory.

Now you can set up PNLInfo Browser in your Windows Program
Manager. Select New... on the Program Manager's File menu.
Select Program Item and click OK. Fill in the Description box
with "PNLInfo Browser" and the Command Line box to point to the
infobrws.exe file. Then click OK. Now you should be able to
double-click the PNLInfo Browser icon to start up the
application.

Starting up the application

Start PNLInfo Browser by double-clicking its icon. It will start
by connecting to the default "home" gopher server. If the
application complains or is not able to connect, see the Trouble-
shooting section below.

There are several ways you can customize the application. To set
the "home" location, select General Setup from the Options menu.
Other items under the Options menu let you set the background
color, turn on inline display of abstracts, and turn off the
"verify quit" message.

To help you explore the application, see the online help (select
Contents on the Help menu), and the tutorial (select Open a
Browser at Tutorial from the File menu). The tutorial will
actually do a network connection to PNL's public server, so it
can be a good way to test out some simple network actions.

Trouble-shooting

If at any time, the application is not able to connect to a
remote server, first try connecting to another server. Next, try
exiting and restarting it. If it is still unable to connect (or
if it has never been able to connect), the most likely reason is
the winsock.dll.

If you get repeated errors like "unable to retrieve that item
[3440]" and are not able to view any items, it may be that your
download directory is full or setup incorrectly. PNLInfo Browser
creates a subdirectory called Download where it puts temporary
files. If there is no space for any new files, you will get
errors any time you try to view things. To fix this, rearrange
or delete items to make space, move the application to an area
with more space, or edit the .ini file to point the download
directory to a place where there is enough space.

Feedback to PNL

We welcome feedback on PNLInfo Browser. If you have problems,
please describe the actions that led up to the problem, any error
messages that the application showed (including the message
number, if any), and any pertinent information about the
particular item(s) you were trying to access.

Send comments, suggestions, and bug reports to info-
browser@pnl.gov.
